Hosted by self-proclaimed self-proclaimed madcap Pizza Queen and creator of ‘Za the Pizza Zine Nicki Yowell, the event features several local pizzerias, each representing a different geo-pizza mentality. “
Our tasting is like a Portland pizza dream team: Red Sauce Pizza, East Glisan Pizza Lounge, Scottie’s, Tastebud, Life of Pie, and Handsome Pizza have all been kind enough to donate pies, their time, and their invaluable expertise. I am glowing with cheesy pride!

Have to get real for a minute and say that this event has been years in the making. I started ‘Za the Pizza Zine, appropriately enough, here in Portland during an internship almost eight whole years ago. I’ve put out three full issues and two special issues since, the most recent a huge, undertaking.
Pizzas of the USA has been months in the making and I can’t be prouder. Please stay tuned for more awesomeness from ‘Za the Pizza Zine and your (humble) Pizza Queen, Nicki Yowell.
Your pizza publishing pals at ‘Za the Pizza Zine will be posted up at Olympia Zine Fest in scenic Washington state tomorrow October 14 from 11 am-5 pm PST. Visit us at the tabling expo at The Olympia Center, 222 Columbia Street NW over at Table 33A. We’ll be slinging our newest divine creation ‘Za the Pizza Zine #3 complete with our incomparable Portland Pizza Quest Guide along with other tasty creations. See ya there! This is my first formal post for my ‘Za the Pizza Zine blog.
I will be at Chicago Zine Fest with a brand new zine, Slice of Life, this Saturday. It’s all about pizza memories from my life. Here’s an excerpt:
The biggest thing Pizza Hut had going for it in the mid-‘90s was the lunchtime buffet. From the hours of 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., the Pizza Hut outpost at the corner of Whipp Road and Far Hills became a haven for famished firemen, reluctant business professionals from the nearby office park and weary, pushover mothers and their hungry, writhing child swarms. My mom and I, along with my best friend Stephanie, were often among them during the summer months.
And guess what? I’m going to be passing out free pizza from Lou Malnati’s and from my own kitchen. It’ going to be awesome! I’m really excited to check out zine this from Rochester New York called eat. You’ll never guess what it’s about.
What zines are you guys excited to see? I’m looking forward to checking out if there are any other crazy food zines at the fest.
I’m also stoked for the Zinester Karaoke on Friday at Quimby’s. I’m sure I and others will be embarrassing ourselves.
Also, I wrote a couple previews for the A.V. Club Chicago about some hometown zinemakers. Check out the first two with Michelle Aiello of Indigo and Ramsey Beyer of List!
